Is it worth reading the book "Code" by Charles Petzold (for a general understanding of the operation of computers)?

In general, I do web development in high-level languages. I wanted to know how everything is arranged from the very bottom, so to speak, the history of development and the design of computers as a whole, how everything developed. Those here is this kind of information in a more or less compressed form. From Physics to, for example, Assembler. I have an understanding of some things, but the knowledge is somehow partial - there is no complete overall picture, there are many gaps.
So I found the book "Code" by Charles Petzold, started reading, but it seemed somehow too (for me) "artistic" or something. I would like some more technical literature.
What do you think, is it worth reading for these purposes or can you suggest any other options?
ps I googled, but for example, I did not find any sane reviews on this book from IT specialists.
Thank you!

For a general understanding of the operation of computers, read better Tanenbaum - Computer Architecture.
