Is it worth it to enroll in AFSB?
Hello dear habrolyudi! I thought for a very long time before writing here, and nevertheless decided, because I understand that knowledgeable people should be involved in resolving the issue. So, I’ll describe my situation in detail: this year I’m graduating from one of the technical colleges in our country, majoring in “Information Security of Automated Systems”, I’m doing excellently, I have good places at IT Olympiads behind my back. I really like this area, for this I decided to continue my studies in it further. In view of the fortunate circumstances (Health group A1, excellent grades, good level of physical fitness), I decided to enter the Academy of the FSB (Moscow), a division of IKSI (Institute of Cryptography), in the same specialty that Evgeny Kaspersky graduated from. Actually, said and done. The application has been written. Passed the military medical commission, polygraph examiner, psychologist, passed the standards for physical training. Personality checks were also passed, they said to wait for a call for admission to the Academy. There will be an entrance exam in mathematics and physics, well, this should not be a problem, the college gave a good mathematical apparatus.
Actually what is the question? And here is what, dear Khabravchans: Will they give a really good education there? Will I be able to really make the country a better place in this job, and not create a second Kwangmyeong? What is the general attitude towards the technical staff of this organization in the IT field?
In general, I ask everyone who has some information, has experience of communicating with people from this structure, simply has a stable point of view on this issue, please speak out. I think I will be understood by those who also once made a choice on which their future depends. I really don't want to screw up. Perhaps, before it’s too late, I’ll change my choice and go to a civil university, like ITMO or MIPT, we’ll see.
I apologize for the "sheet" of the text, and I expect constructive answers from you if possible.

Knowledge there will be excellent, but specific. The main emphasis is on group theory and finite automata (crypto, after all). Somewhere in the Mechanics and Mathematics you will get knowledge no worse (Glukhov M.M., a lecturer in algebra in the first group, reads at the same time at Moscow State University).
But there are a couple of difficulties.
1 is a military educational institution. And that means there will be outfits and guards. Accordingly missed pairs, and this is not considered a good reason. The missing material will have to be taught by yourself in your free time. You cannot have any literature or lectures in the outfit. But some officers on duty turn a blind eye to this. And some can punish and select.
2 - living conditions. The dormitory and the academic building are essentially one large building. The hostel was completely renovated in 2008-2009, new furniture was brought in. But you will not have the right to leave the Moscow region (no one will follow on purpose, but if you light up your passport somewhere, you will run into trouble). Only during summer and winter holidays. And if you are a Muscovite, then you will not be provided with a hostel (in our country, a guy from Elektrostal was given a place only six months later, he went to study for 2-3 hours one way). Well, the entrance after 23-00 - a strict reprimand. 3 severe reprimands - expulsion. So if you're late, it's best not to come. But at the same time, you can write a report on going to a night session at the cinema (or elsewhere). Then there will be no problems.
3 - The area around the Academy is a large wasteland. Opposite is the Olympic Village. But there is nothing there except ponds and the old stadium. In general, take a walk there only to the shopping center. Something more interesting - to go closer to the center (there is no metro nearby, you can go to it by bus, or 30-40 minutes on foot).
4 - You will see girls only in the dining room during KMB. A building for translators is being built nearby. But when it will be completed is unknown.
5 - Alpatsky is just for *** you. A position was specially established for a person in order to shove him away from the administrative building (he got everyone). Now he walks and looks after the cleanliness of the floors, toilets and order in the rooms (and this is in the rank of lieutenant colonel).
6 - from whom you will be recruited (where after studying they will determine). These are 16 and 8 centers and the Ministry of Defense. If there is no 16 or 8 center in your hometown, then after studying you will be sent to some closed town. And you will be at least 5 more years as a student. The Ministry of Defense will usually distribute its own to normal officer units.
And one more important point. Since 2009, there has been a condition for all students - in case of expulsion, you will have to pay everything that the state spent on your education. For the first year a little - 20-30k. And from the second year of study, the first contract is concluded. And this is 12k (old prices) monthly salary, + 10-12 salaries one-time for the conclusion of the first contract. Those. if they are expelled in late courses, then the amount will come up rather big.
2 days of study counts as 1 day of service. Discharge after the 2nd course - you will not go to the army. Otherwise, you will serve out the remaining days.
IMHO, after the state said "there is no cryptography other than GOST", nothing can be done there ...
There is also a former FAPSI in Orel, a KGB school, now it seems to be called something with the protection of the president. We had lightning at their training ground there, several friends studied there. Definitely worth it. you will get the opportunity to move to another level in the social hierarchy. Jae do not doubt the other issue is that it seems hard to learn.
