Is it worth investing in an eye-tracking device?
I would like to learn about the practical benefits of eye-tracking technology for testing the usability of interfaces.
I'm developing web interfaces for enterprises and I'm used to using user observation as my main method of usability research. This is when you give the user a task and monitor its implementation, noting the obstacles that the user encounters when interacting with the system, in order to get rid of them in the next iteration.
I want to decide for myself whether it is worth investing in equipment for eye-tracking analysis (from $1500), which has become affordable, although there are also very expensive items. There are also laboratories offering eye tracking analysis services (from $ 500 per site), I don’t give links that would not be considered advertising. In general, I'm wondering if this is a good assistant to the developer or a toy "about nothing"? Share your experience.

Interesting idea. We tried to use a similar device for testing, but the idea, as I understand it, did not last long, and then they completely refused, but the device remained. It costs only $100;

Invest! I personally know people who are ready to give if not $500, then $300 for sure. I am ready to help with clients, the technology is very cool, I hope you still decide.
Such an acquisition will pay off in a couple of months, I guarantee.
Depending on what device, they are very different, well, the methodology here is no less important.
At one time, for such studies, it was necessary to fence not a frail optical system, and calibrate for each experimental subject, although my requirements for accuracy were many times higher, because it was not what we looked at anymore, but how ...
