Is it worth combining gamification and scoring system in an educational service?

There is a course creation platform. White Label scheme, that is, we rent, and clients themselves create their own schools, courses within schools. Accordingly, user accounts are not end-to-end for all schools, but separate for each organization, but each account can have as many completed courses as the school has.
There is an element of gamification - experience and levels. It is not tied to the course, but to the account, that is, to the school. Passing several courses, the level will be higher. The task arose - to complete the training not with the final test, but with the number of points scored.
Points are given for the same activities for which the experience. There is some confusion with them.
There are two options to choose from:
1) Combine points and experience, and as a result, in addition to the general scale of experience, show how much you need to score specifically on this course.
2) Separate these two concepts. There is experience - a game element that does not affect learning, and there are points - a specific assessment of studies in a particular course, and not beyond the course.
What do you think? Which option is better?

1st sounds more interesting.
According to the model, it is better to make it as similar as possible to an RPG. I would ask around as a nerd in an MMORPG or sign up for a couple of the most popular ones and draw a model of points and levels from there. Since the main customers mostly played / are playing games and these models are familiar to them.
