Is it profitable to run a home server?

I got the idea to put some kind of server at home

  • MSI G31TM-P35
  • Intel Xeon E5405
  • 2x2GB DDR2 800
  • HDD SATA 7.2K 500GB
  • Network 100Mbps

From tasks:
  • Samba
  • LAMP
  • Minecraft PE server for 10 slots

Therefore, the machine must be online 24/7/365.
How expensive is it, considering the cost of electricity at a cost of 1.81r / kW, to maintain this miracle and does it have any benefit or sense?
Or did I get confused in vain and renting a VDS would be more profitable?

All the iron is there, you don’t need to buy anything, right?
You will only need a static IP, probably
the power of your server is about 100 W, that is, it will eat 2.5 kWh per day for about 4.50 rubles.
Then think for yourself and draw your own conclusions.

Let's say it consumes 100 watts, then your costs will be something like 4 rubles a day. Or 120 rubles a month.
This is without taking into account the Internet and related costs.
Playing minecraft with friends is a 100% good option. Plus, you can use this server as a home file cleaner.
If the server is commercial, definitely not, they will zaddos in an instant.

My home server is running on lga775 simply because it's cheap. He downloads torrents, and then he shows music to everyone. You can also debug and test on it. And I have production on a rented one because 100Mbps is not enough and it’s troublesome to provide 24/7 with the slightest commercial success.

For a home server, there is no concept of "profitable" - they don't keep it for the sake of money, if you try to make money on it - this is a dead number from the word at all. The home server is run by:
- people who do not trust the storage of mail and file archives to "clouds"
- people who keep game, file and other servers "for their own"
- IT people for a wide variety of purposes
Business costs for maintaining a ready-made server are cheap - iron / kettle consumes more electricity. True, if this is a real server, and not a
pseudo- "server from the desktop", then you will have to come to terms with the fact that it:
A "server-from-desktop" is usually devoid of such shortcomings, though if the power is often pulled, it's better to have "hands" with it so that you can do something.

Is it profitable to run a home server?
It's beneficial for me.
And is it profitable for you - you have to ask.
How costly, bearing in mind the cost of electricity at a cost of 1.81r / kW, to contain this miracle
100-150 rubles per month.
And does it have any benefit or meaning?
But who knows except you, what is beneficial for you?
Or did I get confused in vain and renting a VDS would be more profitable?
Well, compare and count.

if there is iron, and there is where to put it so that it does not get warm and buzz - then do
it; if not - rent

"machine must be online 24/7/365"
The home infrastructure is unable to keep the server running according to the specified schedule. The apartment has completely different conditions for electricity, internet and equipment placement.
