Is it possible to use third party drive for raspberry pi?

I recently got a rasp pi 3 b+ set. It has a samsung 32 evo card. After some experience, I realized that the speed of the "disk" is not enough. I knew that the cards are rather slow and even worse than ordinary hdd, but somehow it turned out to be quite sad.
Therefore, I connected hdd 5400 1tb via usb and got an average of 30 mb instead of 20 for sd. There was an idea to connect ssd and put the system on it.
Is it possible? Will it not turn out that the usb controller will choke on the transmitted data and the meaning of ssd will be lost? And if there is also wifi + keyboard + mouse on usb?
With food, too, not everything is clear. After connecting wifi, sometimes a yellow lightning icon was shown on the right, as I understand it, there was not enough power. This happened when the network was actively used. But after that I didn’t see it, even when I connected the hdd. The wires, like the set, are official.
Is there enough power to run the ssd?
What if you use something like mSATA SSD Storage Expansion?
UPD: Someone wrote about the cards. The card is one of the fastest.

@springimport

There is only one USB2 hub. It already hangs Ethernet, WiFi and BT. 480Mbps for all.
On an SSD, you won’t get a profit in terms of speed except for an increase in IOPS.
