Is it possible to use an external SSD for a second OS?

I would like to buy an external SSD to run Windows, will it work fine, and what would you recommend for a laptop on macOS?
(I don't know much about disks)

Downloading modern versions of Windows will take a very long time.
Only cropped builds of XP or WinPE will actually work.
I advise you to install some Linux

Using Hasleo WinToUSB and the official Windows 10 image, we prepare an external SSD. At the first start from it, Windows is configured and further works faster than when installed on the internal HDD. It is desirable that the external SSD-box be with a USB 3.0 interface and not outright deshman (like the SSD itself).
