Is it possible to speed up a virtual machine?

There is Ubuntu 14.04. You need a virtual machine to install Windows and install Visual Studio (you need to study).
I did everything, but everything is terribly slow. Is it possible to speed it up somehow?

Give the virtual machine more cores or RAM, if any. In general, you need virtual machine configs, which operating system is the guest, what kind of virtual machine is used in general.
I understand that it is impossible to change the host OS? A real case from practice, when changing the distribution kit allowed the virtual machine to work faster (from ubuntu to arch).
