Is it possible to remove the full size when uploading images in Wordpress?

When uploading images through the standard uploader, Wordpress multiplies the thumbnails and leaves the original file size. Is it possible to somehow either remove this full size altogether, or shrink it to a certain size, so that when loading, no matter how big and heavy it is, it remains no more than, for example, 800x600?
