Now I read that it is practically impossible to promote them in the search. Is it so?

It is possible, but there are many problems.
I usually take an alias for the main domain.
For example, stretch-ceilings.rf - to indicate on business cards and call by phone.
And the main domain for placement and promotion is natyazhnye-potolki.ru, it is for promotion.
From Cyrillic 301 redirect to Latin.
So much easier.
