Is it possible to learn Asterisk at home?
The question is probably stupid due to lack of knowledge of the topic, but I would like to clarify - how much is it really possible to learn how to raise / configure / maintain Asterisk at home? It's clear that raising it on a virtual machine is elementary, picking up a softphone thread is also not a problem, but then? After all, there is no real telephone number, equipment for geo-connection, etc. Or are there any tools for this purpose? And then I already ordered a couple of books, it remains to understand whether it will be possible to master it at home.
upd thanks to everyone, I realized that it’s very possible to learn :)

It is very possible that I have made an intercity on pctel, a city through vpn to work there working numbers + a city and cell phones of Moscow, as well as another apartment of my mother’s house and threw a link there and made a local phone number. So it’s quite possible to set up and use, for example, to steer in different directions to different providers + there are gateways for connecting a city line, now almost all PBXs support tone dialing, otherwise almost no gateway can dial on impulse. Yes, and E1550 modems can be plugged in for taxiing to a cell phone and receive incoming messages. So dig, everything is real.
