Is it possible to know in advance what styles are in a web font?

Some fonts included on the web page are not bolded in any way, i.e. the font-weight property does not affect them in any way, just as strong does not work for example.
Is it possible to somehow find out in advance whether this property will work on the font or not, i.e. can it be made bold?
