Is it possible to install linux mint on a computer with ancient components as the main system, as a replacement for Windows 7, or is it better to leave it to live out its days on the seven?

Gotta go. But it's better to try livecd and choose some lightweight graphical shell (mate, xfce). In general, for weak PCs, there is lubuntu.
But as for me, if windows 7 suits and does not slow down, then why not stay on it?
For very weak computers awesome https://www.bunsenlabs.org/
Very light.
I have a Mint with 4 gigs of RAM with cinnamon that behaves quite smartly. True i3, but far from the first freshness (2.4 GHz, 3110M which), so I think that it will be fine on your cinnamon, you can mate (it's a little easier)
Py.Sy. "leave to live on the seven" smiled a little, at one time the seven began to dull me (in general it is useful to interrupt Windows periodically (at least once every couple of years)), at the top ten the laptop came to life compared to the seven, similarly to my father I changed the seven to ten, there the laptop is even weaker (also i3, but 2.1 GHz and 3 gigs of RAM). But still, Mint is faster, so put it on and don't worry.
