Is it possible to edit a file in an archive?

There is a certain format, which is essentially an archive. I in properties of a file specified to open this type rar'om.
And so I open it, drag the file from it into sublime text 3, save it, close the archive. And then I open the archive again and see that the changes to the files were not applied. Is it even possible to check this?

I tried: TXT file in ZIP - TotalCommander opens, edited with Notepad, packed back with corrections.

Many files (exe, docx, etc.) are also opened by the archiver, but this does not mean that you can do anything inside and it will start as before. Think, it's not just that your file does not have an archive extension.
