Is it possible to configure to use only the NVIDIA proprietary graphics card driver?

I'll try to summarize the issue briefly:
There have been repeated attempts to install the proprietary nvidia-340 driver because it was on the recommended list. However, not a single positive result was obtained (the secret of the dark screen), the alleged root cause is the presence of the 2nd built-in card from Intel (HD 4400), designed to implement NVIDIA Optimus technology, and based on a large number of publicly available articles, then you can to summarize the inadmissibility of using only a proprietary driver . Is reality so harsh? Do I have to manually run optirun each time to enable the discrete graphics card? After all, as far as I know, bumblebee (and Linux in general) doesn't support automatic load balancing like Windows does.
Three fundamental points are of interest: 1) am I right about proprietary firewood? 2) If not, how to use only them and could the integrated card prevent the proper operation of the proprietary driver?
Discrete Card: NVIDIA GeForce 820M
Integrated: Intel HD 4400
