Is it possible to compress site images with nginx?

Now I enable compression for nginx. Enabled for html/css/js.
Question: can and should compression be enabled for png/jpg/ico files? I read a remark that if this thing is turned on, then the site can simply lie down under load.

There is no point in compressing already compressed pictures.
The size can sometimes even increase.
