Is it possible to change an environment variable in Azure DevOps (VSTS) so that it is saved and its value is used in future builds?

Hello,
I can’t find information on whether it is possible to somehow change the value of the environment variable in the pipeline so that this value is used the next time this pipeline is started?
I want to implement an increment of the build number so that the revision is increased by one each time it is launched.
PS: I can't use third-party extensions from the marketplace due to company policy

It looks like I will have to use the REST API, I did not find another way.
