Is it possible to boot from an external SSD on a MacBook Pro 16?

I am considering buying a MacBook Pro 16. Often I need to work with Windows and Linux, and the use of virtualization systems (vmware, virtualbox) is not suitable for a number of reasons. Bootcamp doesn't work either!

Is it possible to buy an external SSD, install it on 1/2 Windows 10, 1/2 Ubuntu, boot and run fully through a MacBook Pro 16?

I ask because I see a lot of tightening screws from Apple for users who need something non-standard.
