Grub is the bootloader.
If you booted before entering the password - the problem is not in grub.
I understand that since it does not log in, then there are 2 options:
1. Incorrect login / password.
Deleted user? Or is the /etc/passwd file corrupted? (this is possible if the HDD fell down from a walrus of electricity)
2. The problem is in lightdm (where you log in - it's lightdm by default in ubuntu) - can you reinstall it?
I would still recommend saving important files and reinstalling everything from scratch, although this is not the linux way. Still, it's better to save files because, as I think, part of the HDD has died out.
