Is it possible to add in-app purchases to a free android app that is already on google play?

I have a free android application on google play and it's been there for about half a year. And now I thought about monetization. Is it possible to embed purchases in the same application so as not to lose current users?

You can’t turn a paid application for free and vice versa, but you can embed purchases anytime and arbitrarily

Yes, but it won't automatically update. When new permissions are added, the user must explicitly allow the app to be updated by logging into the market.
