Is it possible in Virtuemart to distribute images into subfolders?

There is a bunch of Joomla + Virtuemart, where a little more than an infinite number of products are loaded. All these products take images from the same folder: ".../images/.../virtuemart/product", because of which, when accessing this folder, the server slows down and crashes. Is it possible in Virtuemart to somehow distribute images into subfolders using standard tools?
