Is it necessary to have tens of gigabytes of blocks for Bitcoin-qt to work?

370K blocks weigh 50 GiB. There are still 12 weeks left, I feel there will be a lot there too. After synchronization, is it necessary to keep these blocks?

The classic Bitcoin wallet requires the entire block chain to be synchronized. There are wallets that do not store all blocks, but validate transactions on the fly. You pay for this with less (in theory) reliability and the need to trust other network participants more.

At the moment, the completely downloaded base on Bitcoin Core 11.1 weighs 53.5 GB
. You can always choose between convenience and security. I generally recommend having several wallets. for example, a web wallet with change that is convenient to use without fear of losing significant amounts, a full wallet for storing significant amounts, and possibly an offline wallet if you plan to store large amounts that will not be needed in the near future.
I recommend this article for choosing wallets: Bitcoin wallets by weight categories .
And on storage security this one: Bitcoin Wallet Security . The second, though old (2011), but you can collect useful ideas from there.
