here you can’t even edit a comment, but you are talking about a nickname)

It depends where and why it is used, if only for login, then it is not necessary. But the possibility of changing the DisplayName more often than this should be.

Systems where the login is a nickname are already dying (if not already extinct).
Separate these concepts and allow changing the nickname if the site is entertaining. Otherwise - at your discretion (or at the discretion of the customer).
Remember one thing - people like to change their "name" (nickname) often and this adds more freedom to the resource.

It is possible, but with the full history of the change in public access - the country should know its heroes :)

just the other day, I also asked a similar question, more precisely, at first with a slightly more extended version - is a nickname needed at all if there is an email for login, First name + Last name to be displayed on the site in the form (Vasya P.), I came to the conclusion that it is still needed for a more humane user profile identification. so that the urls are not /profile/id123456, but /profile/nickname - this does not create any additional loads on the server, but it is more understandable and more convenient for users. Well, now you can answer your question - it all depends on the type of site and the authorization methods on it. If the nickname is used for login, it’s better not to allow it to be changed, if it’s just for displaying on the site (Display Name in the IPB and vBulletin forums) - then why not, the main thing is that knowing the current nickname you can always determine the user, well, no functionality (like bans) was not tied to a nickname.

In my opinion, firstly, as already mentioned, you need to separate the login and the display name. At least for security reasons. Secondly, it is necessary to give the opportunity to change the display name. This will give users more options. Especially if you are developing a forum or some kind of social network. This is not on Habré, because. Habr has rather strict rules, and here many people know each other by name. As for the login, it’s best to remember Okama’s razor and not to produce entities. Why separate login and e-mail?
Total: my choice. email for authorization, display name for communication on the site. Give the opportunity to change both.
If you cannot or do not want to change your concept, then remember that when registering, the user can simply make a typo in the login. If you do not give him the opportunity to change his login or at least delete an account in order to register the correct one for the same mail, he can simply leave. It happened to me.

If you do, then do not link the user's page to the nickname only to the id of the entry in the database
. But, in my opinion, this is superfluous. They will change their nickname a couple of times a day and spoil where they don’t get. But if necessary, keep a log of changes and introduce a limit on the number of shifts, well, and, possibly, write off points or karma per shift.

For me, there shouldn’t be nicknames at all, it’s more interesting and communication is unbiased.

Fucking, the topic is at least in a small, but plus, and the karma was minus by 5. Well, what kind of motherfuckers do this, they would at least justify it.
