Is it possible to write a website (backend and frontend) only in React, or is NodeJS better in this regard?

Up to a point you can. But then you will begin to understand that something is still missing (whether you start with Nodejs or React, it doesn’t matter), and the amazing world of fullstack development will open up, where both React and Nodejs modules live and at the same time are considered one project.
