Is higher education important for web development?

Hello, do I need to go to higher education if I want to be a web designer/developer?

Need? No.
But high-quality higher education will help a lot.
And poor quality is very annoying, taking time.
Therefore, if you have the opportunity to get into a good university, then be sure to go. And if in Russian, then avoid.
I open vacancies, in 70% of cases I need a v.o.
It is necessary in those vacancies where there are no requirements for skills. In entry level jobs.
Get the skills and you won't need VO.

no one will give you a guarantee of normal employment - with or without education. But ceteris paribus, the chance of getting a job with education is higher. Yes, having real knowledge is more important. However, you will have to prove for a long time that you really know something. If you don't want to waste time on full-time - get a part-time job.
well, about "99% of knowledge will not be useful to me." I thought so too for a long time. And then I suddenly noticed that the technology course that I was taught 20 years ago, and which is extremely far from my main work in information security at the bank, suddenly came in very handy. You will just know more. Not all knowledge will come in handy directly - but it's like a general store of knowledge.

I work as a programmer, I graduated from the master's program with honors, I work well, but 90% of university skills were not useful at all, but completely different skills were useful, in particular, preparing for a session in a couple of days.
Also, for some reason, everyone thinks that at the university they will give you all the knowledge on a silver platter, but nothing like that, you usually learn the most important things yourself, if you're lucky, then within the framework of scientific activity (fortunately, sometimes they allow you to choose a topic in accordance with your interests).
I believe that the university does not increase the amount of knowledge, skills, abilities, but rather structures them, subject to successful admission.
Upd. I think that it is not necessary for a programmer to graduate from a university, but it can be useful for self-development.

Higher education tells the employer that you are not a woodpecker if you were able to graduate from college.

After college, you can also go to VO, right? Nevertheless, the advice is not to be lazy and get at least some kind of diploma, at least if you want to go abroad, where they look at education first of all, it will help you a lot.

Better, of course, do not go there - make room for someone who wants it.

If your ceiling is to do simple websites to order, then of course you don’t need to.
