Is a redirect from old domains useful?

The bottom line is this:
1) There is a young site on a young domain
2) It is possible to buy several old domains on the subject of the site and put a redirect to a new domain
Question:
Will this give something in terms of ranking from the side of PS? Or will it make no sense?
