iPhone firmware update?

I have not dealt with my apple phone for a long time and a question arose.
How do I update my iPohne 3G 3.1.2 to the latest firmware?
Now I'm jailbroken. Googled, a bunch of answers, but off topic.
Thanks

For 3G, the jail is normal for a long time. Literally on Monday I was flashing 4.2.1 on 3G and doing a jailbreak. Unlock did not, because. Russian device. For locked ones, there is ultrasn0w in cydia.
Problems with unlock only for iPhone4. For 3Gs, there is an unlock only for baseband 06.15.00. Well, the jail on the iPad / iPhone4 is only tied so far (more precisely, there is also an unattached one, but a beta version, with glitches)

Under iOS 4, the old 3G works ugly.

My advice to you, either do not update, or wait a bit until the normal Jail 4.2.1. But in general, it makes no sense to put on 3g 4 operating systems, not much. Is it because of new toys, but you yourself understand that 3g is already frail for most of them.

Jail critical?
Do you need unlock?
If not, then just update, today the jail will be tomorrow. If you are an American, then you have to wait.

I have firmware 4.2 on the iPhone 3G, the brakes of both the application itself and applications are quite noticeable. It's better to leave everything as it is, if the new firmware is not critical for you.

In short, the latest firmware is 4.2.1. Jailbreaking it is possible only if you have a Mac (meaning untethered), and the beta flasher is very unstable.
My advice - put 4.1, it is no different from 4.2.1 except for air services, which I am more than sure you do not need.
If you upgrade to 4.2.1, you can say goodbye to the jail in principle.
Be sure to save the SHSH BLOB in Cydia before upgrading to 4.1!
I do not consider tethered jailbreak at all.
