Internet-Media (internally - img): Should Professional Ethics exist in the IT environment?
This question is not technical, but rather philosophical.
This year, 2015, the world-famous and respected composer Ludwig van Beethoven turns 245 years old. On December 16th, Google posted an interactive doodle on its homepage dedicated to this significant event. The execution looks, as usual, impeccable from a technical point of view, but ...
In this doodle, a cartoon character, obviously depicting Ludwig van Beethoven, enters into a fight with a horse, while stepping into the mud (at best); falls on his face into the dust of the pavement; climbs a tree and gets hit with its beaks from a flock of birds. At the end, the authors of the doodle even throw the protagonist, like a bitter drunkard, off the bridge into the river. In Doodle, the main character appears helpless, if not pathetic, stupid and unlucky, and what happens to him looks humiliating for any person.
Let me remind you that Google created this doodle in honor of the birthday(!) composer, a recognized classic who significantly enriched music with his works. In addition, as far as I know, he was a man with a difficult fate, a fighter in life, who performed noble deeds, which is also worthy of respect (in particular, Beethoven sought out and saved from starvation the impoverished daughter of Johann Sebastian Bach, who had died by that time).
In addition, this doodle is available almost all over the world (according to the official link to the doodle ) for 2 days - December 16th and 17th.
That is, within 2 days, numerous users of the Google system around the world can watch how the animated Ludwig van Beethoven falls face down into the horse's head...Well, that is, horse mud.
Most likely, Google wanted to create just a fun joke, a game. But it looks disrespectful, insulting to the memory of the composer. Personally, it was difficult for me to expect this from Google.
At that moment, the thought of professional ethics in the IT environment came to my mind, in particular in the field of Internet media. Should big players like Google, and IT companies in general, think about the moral aspect of their developments, about how not to offend human dignity? After all, this is the area that is not regulated by The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, here everyone is free to choose. Maybe I take this doodle joke too close to my heart, and in fact it is "innocent and harmless"? But let me suggest that if the Google Doodle was dedicated to a living famous and influential artist, for example, George Lucas, then it is unlikely that the scriptwriters from Google would have allowed themselves to throw the main character into the mud or "bath" in the river in order to avoid lawsuits.
And what do you say on this issue? Do you disagree or agree with me about this doodle? Should there be ethical boundaries in the IT environment? Or can you do everything to attract and entertain the audience? Share your opinion and experience, as programmers with a programmer - for me, as a beginner in my professional career, it is your opinion, fellow engineers, that is important and interesting.
PS Here are some shots from the described Google Doodle in honor of the anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven:
