Intelligent 4:3 to 16:9 conversion?

Sorry for the noob question. I'm watching an old flash movie from 1990 in 4:3 format. Is there any way to look at a 16:9 monitor without distorting the picture (in the style of jock-mutants) or zooming in with cropping (without head and legs) (in short, methods are better than in Vlc).

So there seems to be no options, adding black bars either on top or on the sides, otherwise you will lose the aspect ratio.

There are options that require considerable computing resources: you need to recalculate the entire video. So not very applicable at home.

  1. They do “intelligent” framing: they automatically determine the significant area of the frame - where there are faces, movement, the algorithm is not exactly known - and enlarge / crop while maintaining it. Eg. Technicolor: adaptive framing ;
  2. Again, intelligent, stretching: the frame defines areas that can be stretched - for example. on the left is the face of the character, on the right is the sky and the sea with the horizon. Here they can be stretched, but you can’t touch your face.
  3. Non-intelligent edge stretching: the central area remains unchanged, the edges of the frame are slightly stretched, filling the lack of width. It does not look very good, but it was sometimes used on television.
