Intel Atom and web development?
Beckon laptops with Intel Atom processors. They beckon terribly, especially with silence, power consumption (duration of work without recharging) and portability. But the question worries me, please tell me if you know:
Is such a computer enough for comfortable work in webdev?
I use Ubuntu, XFCE and LAMP.
Thank you!
UPD. Solution: came to the conclusion that the game is not worth the candle. It is better to buy a more powerful device, as its use will be more comfortable and versatile.
I have nothing against Atom, netbooks and nettops! On the contrary, I deeply sympathize with them. I will definitely get myself such a beast, but not for the mentioned task. Most likely I’ll just buy a tablet to read the Internet on the couch.

Performance may be enough, but working behind a miniature display, IMHO, is a mockery of yourself.
Worked for six months on ASUS Eee PC 1005PE. No brakes, glitches and other things.
OS - Win7
Server - Zend Server
IDE - Netbeans
The only negative is the screen is too small
enough for web development
But it depends on the specifics, if you work with heavy sites, for example, on my core2 Duo page generation from 4 to 8 seconds, then in ATOM it will stretch 3 times :(
So I would still think on an ordinary desktop and a high-quality cooler for silence
Atom is a terrible brake :( There are 11 inch, lightweight laptops on Core i3 - it's better to look in their direction, in my opinion.
Do you want a laptop? Level eee PC 1215N? At 10 inches, typing will not be very convenient. And with 12 shkami it is necessary to look. The same 1215N I picked for a couple of days. Infuriates rattling Claudia and the overall build quality.
Maybe wait at least machines on AMD Fusion? For example, HP Pavilion dm1z. Praise .
Oh, if they made a new HP Pavilion dm3z on it with two video cards (Zacate supports discrete graphics) - there would be no price. But for now, only MSI offers 13-inch fusion models (
Oh, no need ... I have experience in this: I took my wife asus eee pc 1101ha. When my laptop was covered, I had to work for this nag for a couple of days. Brake is an understatement. Demolished win7, put pieces of 10 different linux, I thought it would be faster - nifiga. Even on the command line, "thoughtfulness" is very annoying. It's better to take a simple desktop.
PS: as a result, I gave my vaio sz7 to my wife, and took z11 for myself. And asus is now used as a simple video player - it broadcasts Smeshariki around the clock for small =)
With Ubuntu and XFCE, I think you won't notice any visual slowdowns.
IMHO, the main problem is the very small size of the device. Writing / reading code on a 10.1" screen is not very pleasant.
Take better Acer 3820T, and silence will be, and portability, and work will be many times more comfortable.
That's enough, I'm thinking of taking a nettop myself, or, as it is written above, a high-quality cooler)
webdev it is different:
1) more than enough for layout (only you need more memory for firefox)
2) if you code the server part on the server, it’s also enough
2a) but if you want to raise apache/nginx/php/python/ruby /mysql/pgsql is simply not enough.
Well, for example, about layout. Here you are typesetting and you want to see your changes in different browsers. For example FF, Chrome, IE are open for you. (and of course you surf the internet, for example read Habr). And now your atom is already starting to die.
As an alternative to Timelines, take a look at the Lenovo Thinkpad. I was going to take Timeline, but I did not like their keyboard, AO 721, 753, etc. - uncomfortable fused keys and the left edge is unpleasantly pressed through. On the advice of a friend, I took a Thinkpad Edge 11 a month ago, on the U5400. Happy as an elephant! The 6-section battery lasts 5 hours (I programmed it on a sleepless night at the airport, the brightness is 2/3 somewhere), 1.5 kg does not bother me when traveling, the keyboard is VERY comfortable for me, it’s convenient to work on a 11.6 screen, oddly enough, mkv 15- I swallowed a gigabyte, photoshop without any complaints. Today (with tambourines, though - the integrated graphics did not start) installed ubuntu 10.10, while the flight is normal. At a cost without an OS, the same Atom is obtained.
Tried with Acer Aspire One AO521h for half a year. Even taking into account the fact that the code was written in Vim in putty, it was not very good - the small screen and browsers (especially the fox with Firebug) significantly slowed down. Then I bought myself a normal big laptop on Core i5 and stopped suffering from garbage :)
