Installation for local use. There is a possibility?

I'm trying to install SP on VirtualBox.
I bet on WinSer 8 and on WinSer2012. What is there, what is there, I reach the creation of a new farm (the very beginning of the SP installation), it requires a domain user.
I found on the net that it's like a workaround (I think it's a workaround ....), which can be installed with a local user as well.
You launch like Sharepoint Powershell and through New-SPConfigurationDatabase... I enter data, the "incognito" installation starts, and errors pop up:
"... cannot connect to the master database" - this was on WS 8
"To create a farm or connect. to it, you need to specify the server role parameter" - this is on WS2012
How can I get around these errors?
Is it really possible to put SP on a local server without any AD, domains?
Thank you.
