Standard tuning, included updates and built-in antivirus and that's it.

Starting with Win Vista, none of this needs to be done.
UAC - solves the same problem as a separate admin.
Of course, you do not need to mindlessly press "Yes" in UAC

Why should anything have changed? The concept of the system has not changed - everything that is not prohibited for the user is still allowed :)
And yes - if you are not an admin by profession, then you should not turn off UAC - sometimes it comes in handy ...

Nothing has changed since the days of Windows 2000.
If the system will be used for something more critical than sitting in the evening on Steam, then for a start you can

  • set up a local account cut in rights for everyday work,
  • configure firewall,
  • configure AppLocker.
