In an architecture with a GATEWAY API, should all responses be provided by that GATEWAY API?

In an architecture with a GATEWAY API, should all responses (data model, generated view) be provided by this GATEWAY API? For example more interested in server rendering - should the view be returned to the client via this GATEWAY API?
