Icons in AdWords extensions - how to add them?

I noticed in the search results that the company somehow added icons to ads (to ad extensions). I tried to insert through the escape sequence and through copying / pasting the icon itself - AdWords rejects it due to "Punctuation and symbols".
What do you think, what other methods of implementing this can be? Or was it just luck that smiled and moderation did not notice?
