The site has many pages, all on http. I want to buy ssl so that it is on https. What pitfalls await me from the search engines? Particularly interested in what to do with sitemap.xml? Change http to https everywhere?

In the sitemap, you are right, you will need to change to https. And the PS will react normally to the change, Google even encourages.
