I want to register as a freelancer on upwork.
I read about a bunch of pitfalls. About bans for life, and so on.
What should be done before registration, and what should not be done at all, as of 2019?

It's simple - register with your real credentials, go through verification, be ready to answer questions from Upwork. Read the terms of use of the service, agree and do not violate them.
What not to do - use incorrect data or register for someone; poach clients from upwork, work from territories where work is prohibited according to US law (Iran, Korea, Crimea, and other hot spots - see the service rules); cunning with clients, hacking with time and the quality of the work performed.
