I don’t understand the example from headfirst java about the elements of objects?

My compiler complains about this. And even if I wrap it in the Dog class, it swears, and even when I create an object inside this class, it doesn’t work either. I re-read the page 10 times, I don’t understand anything, no explanations

pets = new Dog[7]
