How well do you need to know html and CSS for web development?

Hello! I decided to go into web development, most likely front-end. And my friend and I had a dispute about whether it is necessary to learn html css for this or not. All sites / online schools say that this is what you need to study at the very beginning, the second side of the dispute says that it is enough to know javascript (for a start, of course), html is not needed. As a result, we wrote to a familiar web programmer and he said that you would not write in html, but you need to know it. This begs the question: how deep do you need to learn html for web development 2020? Is it worth spending dozens of hours on it, or will it be enough to learn in a couple of evenings? As you can see on the web, I'm not very savvy yet, so thanks in advance for your replies.

Hello)) for the web, you definitely need to know html, even if you only write servers. Luckily, you don’t need to learn it for dozens of hours, it is memorized on the go. As for CSS, it's a must for a front-end developer to know, and at a good level. With this markup language it is already more difficult - CSS, in my opinion, cannot be learned at all, it must be felt.
In general, to start a front-end career, it’s useful to simply lay out sites.
JS is already the next level: first at the level of "animation", animation and dynamics of the site, and only then at the level of a full-fledged front-end, frameworks, logic, SPA, PWA, up to 3d rendering, online games and the development of mobile applications such as discord or instagram

HTML will learn on its own as the site develops.
Take a basic course at html academy and that will be enough. Then google will help.
Learn JS for frontend and css
