There is a need to interview candidates for the position of a web developer. His responsibilities: developing a website with adaptive layout on Bitrix cms, as well as writing a REST API for interacting with mobile applications. I have not dealt with interviews of such specialists before, and I am not able to competently assess the quality of their code. What can be done in this case? What test task will be correct so that the candidate can complete it in 48 hours, and it would be possible to understand from the result of his work that he is really suitable for the position?
the following options are considered: -
make up a site template with adaptive layout according to the finished design (psd)
- write the simplest REST API

If you do not have a specialist who is more competent than the one you want to hire, then the exit is 2:
1. As you have already been told, find such a person (this should not be a lot of problems, managers should value their reputation very much)
2. See reviews of his work, recommendations. See github and linkedin. See previous experience. I don't think it would be embarrassing for you or him to get a real recommendation from one of his previous employers. The point is. If there is no one who will competently evaluate knowledge (it is difficult even for someone who understands the topic better), then the only way out is trust.
No tests will help. And for such requirements, it is not a fact that many suitable people will undertake to solve it.
