How to work with WebSocket correctly (installing the necessary components on the server)?

Good afternoon! I can’t find a good instruction on how to properly make the site work with sockets and what should be installed in general.
I have a Debian 9 VPS server, what next?
I read that Node.js is also needed, in some tutorials they also write about some kind of Express, somehow open a port (any or a specific one?).
Is there an article on the internet on how to run sockets on the server from A to Z, right down to the sanity check?
Not necessarily Node.js and Socket.io, I just see that many people advise them.

I would recommend pthreads for PHP.
