How to work with a template in Bitrix?

Forgive me for this question, I know that there is documentation, but maybe someone will explain to me on the fingers. A site appeared on Bitrix, it is necessary to redesign it. I go to "Site List - Options" and see Templates. One (template_1) with a condition on the main page (index.php), the second without all the conditions (for all internal pages) - template_2.
Styles for them repeat absolutely.
But the template for the main page also includes what should be directly for it - a list of news and other splash screens, including both the footer and the header.
In the template for the inner one, but also with a header and a footer
I made one template "my_template" and substituted it for all pages (both with a condition on the main one and for all the rest). I included #WORK_AREA# there and the internal pages started working. But not the main one. And where, in fact, is the main page stored where I can poke the components specifically for it? Now it just displays #WORK_AREA#

Instead of #WORK_AREA#, the Bitrix core inserts executable files, in the case of the main page, this will be the file site.ru/index.php
