How to use the MdIcon directive?

Give an example of using the MdIcon directive in angular 2. I imported the MaterialModule module, tried to write it in the component:
<md-icon>home</md-icon>
Alas, it doesn’t work, I don’t understand how to work with material icons and buttons.
