How to use html5 wordpress template for website from scratch?

Hey!
I am learning the basics of layout (html5 + css), I wanted to create my own mini-blog, a simple theme without bells and whistles, but as I understand it, you can’t do without a database, i.e. if done without a database, then the html code will swell to cosmic proportions. A friend advised me not to worry and install a wordpress html5 blank template and attach its database, since I already did this "exercise" once, I did it on the advice, installed a clean theme, screwed the database, but the next steps are not clear what and where to edit , which css file and html, I remember there was a video on YouTube, but it was lost, it explained more or less (in English) what was happening. What can you advise, any tutorials (resources) may be lying around from the knowledgeable gentlemen, I would very much like to create my own without installing other people's themes, knowledge of php is zero.
