How to use American Express eGift Card?

Two weeks ago I received an American Express eGift Card. It came with a 15-digit code, an expiration date, and a 3-digit security code.
I did not succeed in linking this card to PayPal. the registration form required a 4-digit security code, with Steam the same story.

How can this money be spent?
