How to understand shit code from open source projects, in particular prusa?

Really, how? I wanted to finish prusa for myself, but the code is not clear and I did not find the documentation. The same problem with any open source project, such as ArduPilot.

Do you always want awesome code and documentation? also for free?
open source does not eliminate the need to be able to read and debug someone else's code. or pay money.
