How to transfer data from one macbook to another?

The task is to transfer all files and installed programs from one macbook to another. What is the best way to do this? Sorry for the stupid question, I've never done this before.

even easier, boot from the network, use disk utility to make a full image to an external drive, download a second poppy from the network, deploy the image to a new poppy
another option using a thunderbolt, put the source in target disk mode, go through all the steps on the new one until the migration assistant appears, cling old poppy as an external drive to a new one, profit
