How to take payment from a client?

Hello. I am developing applications for Android. Gathered a small team to make applications to order. After analyzing the sites of other companies involved in the development of mobile applications, I noticed that they work according to approximately the same scheme. The first two stages are a customer survey and preparation of TOR. So that's the question: how to take money:
1) in stages (at each iteration)
2) Take part of the money in advance.
Thank you.

1. Prepaid: 1/4 is enough to understand that the Client is not wasting your time.
2. According to the TOR: if the complexity of drafting the TOR and the work of the presale is more than 5% of the cost of the project as a whole, create a paid stage - design.
3. By stages: depends on the complexity and volume.
Usually, 3 iterations are enough (by shares):
3.1. advance payment: 1/4
3.2. post-payment stage: 1/4
3.3. delivery of the project: 2/4
Sometimes, they use 4 (so that the payment goes equally) or more (if the project is complex).

Approach clients individually.

@AntonMZ

Take 50% immediately, the rest at the end of the project.
If you do not take an advance payment, then there is an option that the client will leave and you will be left with a lot of time spent, as well as a whole team of hungry mouths! =) This is what concerns the bulk of customers. For the rest, apply the answer from Andrey Burov.

It is better to break everything into independent tasks, brought to a certain point. And then to receive denyushku on completion of each of them. So it is clearer to the customer that the case is moving, and it is clear what he is paying for. And the performer is guaranteed to be paid. At any time, both parties can suspend the execution of tasks and no one will be offended. And the other developer will be aware at what stage they stopped.
