How to shoot ducks on the console?

Once, when I was little, I saw a prefix where you have to aim a gun at the TV screen and shoot ducks.
Probably 12 years have passed since then, I grew up, to some extent I learned both nuclear and quantum physics, not to mention more “household” optics or electronics.
However, I still cannot understand - how is it even possible to track the direction of the barrel of a plastic gun? Well, there certainly aren’t any sensors on the Beryozka TV, except for one IR port for the remote control, which is located at one point and cannot determine which side the signal was coming from.
There was a wire from the gun to the attachment. The gun itself inside consisted of a small circuit board, possibly an IR LED, and a set of lenses.
Maybe someone knows the answer to the question: how does it work?

In short - a photo sensor, it reacts to white color, a picture is inserted into the video sequence - a flooded black screen with a white square - to which it reacts pistol, so you can find a white object and shoot it :) and you will always hit

I pointed the gun at the light (at the window) and hit the “ducks” on the screen, so this question disappeared for me)

A narrowly focused photocell is located in the barrel of the pistol. The photocell at the time of the shot reads the lighting and transmits information to the processor of the console. The moment the trigger is pulled, the TV screen turns black for a fraction of a second, with a white rectangle instead of the target. The pistol returns "1" if it is aimed at the target, and "0" otherwise. If there are multiple targets, the hit one is determined by a binary search.

I can’t understand something about how binary search is implemented when there are several targets on the screen, and they flash in turn when fired. Explain, pliz.
