How to set up a network for the game?

Hello! Guys, the question is probably stupid, but I'm a noob in this matter. In general, there are two home computers - a regular desktop and a laptop. There is also a wi-fi router. A regular computer is connected to the router via a cord, and a laptop, respectively, via wi-fi.
The computer received the ip address 192.168.0.100, and the laptop 192.168.0.103.
The laptop remarkably responds from the computer to this address, and the computer, respectively, from the laptop. Those. the network seems to be there. We tried yesterday with a friend to play a toy (X-Com Enemy Within), but the client in the game does not want to see the server in any way. Those. one player creates a server (via LAN), and the client tries to find it, but the list is empty (you cannot enter ip manually there).
We also tried to create a virtual network through tunngle. There you can choose which address ranges to assign. We tried different options, and the only time on the range 192.168.X.X the client did see the server, but in the end it didn’t even connect (like the response timed out). All firewalls are disabled (both built-in Windows and third-party antiviruses). What do you think, what is the point? In the game itself? Or is a network like ours (via a router) not enough to connect and do you need to configure something else?

Try starting with DirectPlay diagnostics (dxdiag, network check). Such a problem can be if the computers have very different versions of DirectX.
