How to set maximum text width in PostScript language?

I need a certain type of PS file, which will be compiled into PDF in the future.
I am writing code in PostScripte.
In the code I draw a black rectangle 5 * 3.5mm. I place text in the center. It is necessary that the text occupies no more than 4.5 mm in width. Those. if it exceeds this size, the text was compressed to 4.5.
How to do this?

You read the metrics of the font with which the inscription will be made.
You calculate the resulting length of the inscription.
You set the scale in width to fit in the right place.
Little by little you realize that this is not some kind of Korel, they didn’t bring it ready.
